1. What is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is part of a family of diseases known as Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. These diseases all have chronic or recurring gastrointestinal symptoms that have no structural or biochemical cause. IBS is a functional disease of the digestive system that includes excessive diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, and painful cramping

2. What are the symptoms of IBS?
The most common symptoms that IBS patients experience are frequent diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea and or constipation, mucus in the stool, bowel urgency or incontinence, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation after a bowel movement. IBS is considered to be a disorder that is mainly experienced in the lower gastrointestinal tract, so the symptoms tend to remain located below the navel. In some cases symptoms in the upper gastrointestinal tract have also been linked to IBS, these include: difficultly swallowing, a sensation of a lump in the throat or a closing of the throat, heartburn or acid indigestion, nausea, and even chest pain.

3. Does everyone get the same symptoms when suffering from IBS?
Although most symptoms related to the lower gastrointestinal system are experienced by all IBS patients, some experience predominantly excessive diarrhea, or excessive constipation. The symptoms related to the upper gastrointestinal tract are not experienced by all patients; however they are prevalent in a considerable number of cases.

4. How do I know for sure I have IBS?
If you have been experiencing the majority of the above symptoms for an extended period of time, then you should seek medical attention and have your doctor diagnose you. There are certain symptoms by which you can determine yourself if you have IBS:

Abdominal pain or cramps which are:
1. Relieved after a bowel movement and/or
2. Associated with a change in frequency of bowel movements, and/or
3. Associated with a difference in bowel consistency.

As well as at least two of the following symptoms:
1. Different frequency in bowel movements
2. Different form of bowels (e.g. watery/loose stools or hard stools)
3. Different sensation during bowel movement such as a feeling of not being done/”empty” after bowel movements, straining, or severe urgency)
4. Elimination of mucus in the stool and/or
5. Bloating.

Bowtrol was developed to aid IBS patients to regain bowel movement regularity and eliminate excessive feelings of urgency and diarrhea or constipation.
